These polar charges, these happy and sad things in life, are like colors God uses to draw the world. There is probably death at stake, inner death or actual death, you know. If you think about the stories you like most, they probably have lots of conflict. Characters have to face their greatest fears with courage. But nobody really remembers easy stories. When Steve, Ben, and I first started working together, I didn’t want Don to embrace conflict. Nobody cries at the end of a movie about a guy who wants a Volvo. The truth is, you wouldn’t remember that movie a week later, except you’d feel robbed and want your money back. You wouldn’t tell your friends you saw a beautiful movie or go home and put a record on to think about the story you’d seen. IF YOU WATCHED a movie about a guy who wanted a Volvo and worked for years to get it, you wouldn’t cry at the end when he drove off the lot, testing the windshield wipers. These are my notes which I intend to go back to later. It is not a complete summary of the book. Later I turn those highlights into a blogpost. Note: While reading a book whenever I come across something interesting, I highlight it on my Kindle.
